Northern Lights in winter, Midnight Sun in summer.

Alta, pop. 19.000, is one of the largest towns in the sparsely populated Arctic wilderness which is Norway’s northernmost county, Finnmark. This is Samí country, often called Norwegian Lappland.

The prehistoric Rock Carvings in Alta (above)
are on UNESCO’s World Heritage List and bear
witness to the fact that people have lived in this
inclement area for thousands of years.

Great outdoor activities! Spend a night in an Igloo hotel, sleeping on reindeer hides. Take a dip in an outdoor hot tub. Horse and sleigh rides. Snowscooter rides on the vast Finnmark Plateau, watching out for herds of reindeer. A visit to a Samí camp to learn more about their exotic culture, go reindeer racing and learn to throw a lasso. Drive a team of eager Huskies. Make an excursion to «the Top of Europe» – 71 degrees North, the North Cape.

Domestic aiport (ALF) 10 mins. from centre of town, flight from Oslo takes 2 hours.
