Lillehammer

Winter Wonderland!

Winter Wonderland © Esben Haakenstad/Lillehammer Turist ASHost to the successful 1994 Winter Olympics, Lillehammer, pop. 26.600, offers excellent infrastructure for every type of winter activity. Activity- and Wilderness camps in the area offer fun possibilites for team competitions. Why not have your own «Olympic Games»?

There’s alpine and cross-country skiing, snowboarding, bobsleighrafting (for the brave!), tobogganing, snowscooter rides, dog-sledding, ice-fishing, tandem skiing, snowshoe-racing, and even axe-throwing, a time-honoured Norwegian sport dating back to the Viking age! Above: the «spark» (meaning «kick»), a very practical way of getting around on snowy and icy roads.

Meals may be served in a lavvo (a Samí tent), drinks be taken in an ice hotel, and transfers to evening events be done by torchlit horse and sleigh.

Historical venues for evening events include an 1850s beer cellar, a cluster of farm buildings from the 1300-1700s, and the Open Air Museum with its medieval Stave Church in wood.

Distance from Oslo: 2 hours by train, or 3 hours by luxury coach. We’ve chosen to present Lillehammer as a winter destination, but the area works well in summer as well.
