Northern Lights in winter and Midnight Sun in summer.
The spectacular Lofoten Islands off the west coast, north of the Arctic Circle, are the stuff of dreams! Pictureque fishing villages (Henningsvær, right), breathtaking, alpine peaks rising straight out of the sea, the narrow Trollfjord, white, sandy beaches, kids cutting out fish tongues for pocket-money during the annual Lofoten Fisheries, known since approx. 1100, colourful fishing boats, the season’s cod hanging on racks to dry (above) – no wonder painters come from all over the world to capture the essence of these magical islands and their exceptional quality of light!
Fun activities galore! Deep-sea fishing by boat for delicious, fresh cod. Deep-sea rafting in Zodiacs. Eagle and Whale Safaris. A dip in an outdoor hot tub. Snowshoeing. Tobogganing. Spending nights in a more luxurious version of the fisherman’s cottages of old, called rorbu. Events in Lofotr, a reconstruction of a Viking Age chieftain’s house on the site of authentic remains, with the light from cod-liver-oil lamps fickering and the smell of tar in your nostrils.
Easy access by plane, express katamaran or steamer («Hurtigruten») from Bodø (BOO) on the mainland, a flight of about 90 mins. from Oslo.
